Treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes

Myelodysplastic syndromes (hereinafter referred to as MDS) are a group of clonal diseases based on damage to a hematopoietic stem cell resulting from mutations in various genes. Since the hematopoietic stem cell is the progenitor of blood cells, when it is damaged, we will see a reduced number of cells in the patient’s complete blood counts (low erythrocytes, hemoglobin, platelets, leukocytes). MDS is one of the most complex problems in hematology.

Patients with MDS belong to a special category who often require bone marrow transplantion. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is required for the treatment of such patients. In the absence of an HLA-identical (compatible) related (unrelated) donor, haploidentical transplantation may be performed (where a parent is the donor).

It is very important that highly qualified specialists carefully analyze the case and determine the necessity and volume of specific therapy before transplantation to improve its outcome, select the most optimal donor, an effective conditioning regimen, the best source of hematopoietic stem cells, and the volume and duration of immunosuppressive therapy for timely graft engraftment, prevention of “graft-versus-host disease”, and realization of the “graft-versus-tumor” effect. Considering that MDS is an extremely rare disease in childhood, a long period of time is required to build experience in performing the transplantation itself, treating complications associated with the procedure, and preventing disease relapse. The Center has been experienced in treating MDS patients using bone marrow transplantation since 1998.

Information on the cost of disease diagnostics is presented in the table. Information on the cost of bone marrow transplantation can be found in the corresponding section.
